Toxic Release Data
According to the
Environmental Protection Agency's Envirofacts Warehouse, this plant
produced 48,920 pounds of airborne hydrochloric acid in 2005.[1] In
addition to production and packaging equipment, the facility has
five operating boilers that provide it with steam. Four of the
boilers are fired by coal and natural gas, while the fifth is fired
by natural gas. [4]
This facility is a major source [4] of
particulate matter (PM), particulate matter <10 μm (PM10),
nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur oxides (SOX), carbon monoxide (CO),
and hydrochloric acid (HCl). [4].
The plant's plumes are
visible on action days in the Monongahela
Valley.<ref>nsolic@achd.net can verify

Hydrochloric acid is categorized as toxic by
the EPA. [2] A discussion of the health effects of

EPA Action Days Policy
This plant operates on EPA air
action days. [8] An air action day is defined by the EPA as a day
when PM2.5 and/or Ozone is at a level that is unhealthy.[5].
Therefore, this facility adds
PM2.5 precursors to already EPA defined unhealthy air
quality. [2]
