The controls are very simple and easy to get used to allowing the player to concentrate on strategy and ways to beat opponents, rather than worrying about how to move get the character to do what they want. Beach Spikers closely follows the format of Sega's other "Virtua" sports title, in that the player can unlock various hidden stages and costumes through success in the various play modes.
This is the simple arcade style tournament mode, which consists of an 8-team tournament. This can be played in either Team Play or Match Play mode and in Original or Arcade style.
This is the most in-depth mode in the game - it allows you to create your own team (in terms of player names, looks and uniforms) and lead them through the world tour mode. Success on the tour is rewarded by attribute points which you can add to your partner's different abilities, eventually allowing you to have a top-rated team. This created team can also be used in the other play modes, such as arcade mode.
