'Beanbag' refers to a musical movement centred on the southern part of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The style emerged some time in 2002 as a reaction to the state of the local cultural and economic conditions.

Originally noted as a style of DJ mixing, involving the live manipulation of two or more records at the same time - usually old bossa nova and jazz records that are available cheaply at 'op-shops'. It is this DIY ethic that has seen "beanbag" referred to as being dance music's equivalent of the punk rock movement. This DJ style/technique then morphed into original genre of music production.

A compilation CD featuring works in Beanbag style was released at the end of 2003, featuring works by most of the artists who produced in the style.
