[BelAir Networks builds
carrier-grade wireless mesh network equipment that delivers video,
voice, data, and high-speed Internet access throughout cities,
campuses, apartment buildings, businesses, hotels and resorts. With
over 150 deployments worldwide, BelAir is the only company
delivering a complete and comprehensive wireless mesh product
line.
Targeted at municipal networks, cable operators, cellular
service providers and enterprise deployments, BelAir wireless mesh
solutions integrate easily and transparently into existing network
and physical infrastructures.
BelAir Networks wireless mesh
networking solutions are built on a unique architecture that
integrates wireless access with wireless backhaul in an innovative
dual- or multi-radio mesh to provide a high-capacity wireless mesh
network. BelAir's single-radio nodes also integrate seamlessly into
the network offering a low-cost solution for data services
coverage.
To create the wireless mesh, Belair Networks uses
outdoor wireless internetworking platforms that can provide both
indoor and outdoor coverage from an outdoor deployment. Backhaul
radios in each node can be configured point-to-point or
point-to-multipoint with directional antennas. Each node can
connect to multiple others and the combined connections form the
wireless backhaul mesh.
No additional switches, routers or
cables are required to connect multiple platforms.
By using
this approach, the BelAir Networks solution:
eliminates the need
for cables, extra switches and routers to interconnect wireless
mesh nodes
requires five to ten times fewer access points
compared to indoor solutions
eliminates disruptive, in-building
network deployment
reduces WLAN capital expenditures by up to 70%
reduces WLAN operating expenditures by up to 90%
eliminates T1,
DSL and other backhaul costs
provides five to ten times more
capacity and five times more coverage compared to traditional
wireless mesh architectures.
Most importantly, by combining the
best of cellular and WLAN networking, the BelAir Networks solution
offers the lowest-cost wireless mesh network deployment on the
market.
How It Works
In a BelAir Networks
wireless mesh solution, each multi-radio node supports backhaul
coverage in all directions using antennas in a circular array. The
antennas have a high gain and a narrow horizontal beamwidth, which
together with enhanced radio performance, provide significant reach
extension.

The three backhaul radios in each
platform can automatically connect to any one of the eight backhaul
antennas with no need for manual pointing. The selection is done
under software control via BelAir Networks patent pending
autoantenna selection algorithm.
System availability is ensured
through a combination of techniques:
The radio environment is
constantly changing and the radios adapt to these changes on a
packet-by-packet basis. In addition, dynamic power and data rate
changes on individual radio links compensate for radio effects such
as fading and shadowing.
Radio-aware routing algorithms choose
the best route for traffic based on available capacity, latency and
radio link performance.
To increase system up-time and minimize
traffic outages, traffic from each broadband platform can be load
balanced across a minimum of two routes to reduce the impact of
link congestion and failure.
Alternate paths are continuously
calculated and refreshed so that seamless re-routing of traffic can
occur with minimal packet loss in the unlikely event of a link
failure.
A BelAir wireless mesh can easily scale up to meet
increased network demand. Or it can be scaled down to address
lowest cost coverage requirements through the seamless integration
of single- and dual-radio nodes. New nodes can be incorporated into
the network automatically, without complex operator
intervention.
A wireless mesh network can be deployed with a
single egress point (point of presence). As usage increases and
demand warrants, additional egress points can be added for
increased capacity and redundancy through multi-homing.
