Ben Modo in September 2007
Ben Modo (b. September 1977) hails from
Garoua,
North
Province,
Cameroon. His real name is Bernard Modo. In 1998,
he led protests demanding better conditions for students during the
National Talks on Education held in the
Gabonese National Assembly
presided by the Vice President of Gabon,
Didjob
Divungi Di Ndinge.
In an interview given to a Cameroonian
newspaper in September 2007, Ben Modo stated that "Paul Biya will
surely go down in history as may be the most rational and the best
African President of his time". <ref>Andegue, Robert. "Ben
Modo talks", L'Oeil De La Nuit, 2007-09-24</ref> He is seen
by many Cameroonians as someone who could possibly become president
in Cameroon some day.
However, many critics believe that Ben
Modo is just another man of Paul Biya's complex system. They think
that he has been and will remain a player of the current political
Regime, and that no hope should be placed in him.
Today, Ben
Modo lives in the
United States where he works as Senior Project
Accountant for Rolyn Companies (http://www.rolyncompanies.com),
America's Leader in Disaster Recovery and Specialty Construction.
Until last fall, he was the General Manager/Managing Member of
Premiere Construction, LLC.; a MD Corporation that he helped create
in 2004 and that was re-organized in the beginning of 2006.
In
2007, Premiere Construction LLC, a Home remodeler and Builder,
closed due to the crash of the Sub-prime market.
The move to
close Premiere Construction left Ben Modo and his partners in a
difficult financial situation. Their debt burden was estimated in
May 2007 to be $1,972,000. However, Ben Modo showed great strength
and powerful negotiation skills when he succeeded to have creditors
settle for only $400,000; $300,000 of which was to be supported
solely by him.
By December 2007, multiple sources pointed that
Ben Modo had already pay $293,625 of the $300,000 to his creditors.
As of December 31, 2007, only two claims remained open against Ben
Modo, for the total amount of $8,200. When asked why he did not
start by taking care of these long standing debts which were also
the smallest claims, he contested their validity before adding that
he will pay them 'when he can'.
Meanwhile, Ben Modo faces
serious opposition from many anglophone Cameroonians who see him as
someone they cannot trust. Washington based Isaih Bongam, a
powerful cameroonian business man and one-time business partner who
is now among Modo's ennemies, told friends that he considered Ben
Modo as the "smartest francophone" he had seen in 36 years in the
business field.
When asked about that comment, Ben Modo replied
that Mr. Bongam's comments even though acceptable, were far away
from "the many good things [that he had] heard from both
Cameroonian Anglophones and Francophones". He went on to add that
he was confident "Mr. Bongam has even more good things to say
[about him] but he is fighting against himself because he does not
want to say them". He continued by saying that he encouraged "Mr.
Bongam to follow the Royal way".
A Preacher "when he can" as he
says, Ben Modo holds degrees in Business and Public Administration.
He also holds a Fundraising Manager Certification from "The School
Of Fundraising" at
Indiana University, as well as the
prestigious PMP Certification from the Project Management Institute
(http://www.pmi.org).
