Bethel Baptist Church is an
evangelical church in
North
Wilmington, Delaware. The congregation,
founded in
1952, has
historically held to traditional
Baptist beliefs, and lists among its distinctives a
passion about the power and absolute authority of the Word of God
in all its ministries.
Pastor-teacher Clay Miller, who earned his
Masters of Divinity from The
Master's
Seminary, had been a pastor at
Grace Community Church
in California prior to joining the staff in 2003. Miller is a
member of the
Fellowship of
Independent Reformed Evangelicals, and an outspoken critic of
the "
Church
Growth" movement, having been quoted in a newspaper interview
that its methods create "Church for the unbeliever"<ref>
</ref>. He had also addressed this issue in a seminar titled
Church Growth
Gone Mad at the annual Shepherd's Conference.
Although the
church once followed a
congregational form of church
government, it now follows an
elder led model. The church gained
media attention when the leaders sought to discipline several
elderly parishioners - some founding members - for creating strife
within the church over their discontent with this
transition<ref> </ref>. Miller broadcast a weekly
podcast and sermon program on
Greater Philadelphia radio
station WVCH, but it was discontinued in July 2006.
