Big Bang (Korean: 빅뱅, Japanese: ビッグバン), commonly stylized as BIGBANG, is a South Korean hip-hop boyband. The group first gained recognition when their formation was documented on television, titled the Big Bang Documentary, from July to August 2006. The show was also aired online on GomTV and on MTV Korea.[1] Initially a six-member group, one member dropped out during the airing of the show before the official debut,[2] leading to their current line-up of G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung and Seungri.

Signed to YG Entertainment, Big Bang went on to release a string of modestly successful singles and EPs. They broke into the mainstream with the release of the EP Always (2007), which spawned the number-one single "Lies" (Korean: 거짓말). Their follow-up EP Hot Issue and Stand Up cemented their status as one of the reigning hip-hop groups in South Korea.[3] After being crowned "Artist of the Year" from the M.net KM Music Festival and the Seoul Gayo Daesang Award, the group expanded their activities into Japan, releasing several mini-albums and airplay singles. Nonetheless, their materials would not receive proper promotions until the following year with the release of their first physical Japanese single "My Heaven."

By the end of 2009, Big Bang became the most searched artist in South Korea.[4] They also became the first foreign group in Japan to receive the Japan Cable Broadcasting Award for "Best Newcomer" and the first from Korea to receive the Japan Records honor.[5] In recent years, the members have branched out to do solo activities: Taeyang and G-Dragon released solo materials while T.O.P, Daesung, and Seungri started acting.

History

2005—2006: Formation

Before the group's debut, several members already had exposure in the entertainment industry. Leader G-Dragon and lead vocalist Taeyang, signed with YG Entertainment since they were both twelve years old, were known as GD and YB.[2] T.O.P was an underground rapper[6] under the stage name, T.E.M.P.O. Big Bang made their official debut on August 19, 2006 at the Gymnastics Arena in Seoul Olympic Park during the YG Family concert .[7] Following the performance, the group's first single Bigbang was released and spawned the airplay singles "We Belong Together," "A Fool's Only Tears", and "This Love", a cover of the American boy band Maroon 5's own single.[1] The single debuted with over 17,000 copies sold in the month of August[8] and later went on to sell approximately nearly 40,000 copies.[9] The second single BigBang Is V.I.P was released a month later, selling 21,000 copies in that month.[10] It finally netted sales of 32,000 copies.[9] The last single followed its predecessors', with final sales nearing 40,000 copies. [9] At the end of December 2006, Big Bang held their first concert, The Real. The following month, their debut album Since 2007 was released, selling 48,009 copies by the end of February 2007.[9]

2007—2008: Breakthrough success

On February 8, 2007, Big Bang released their live concert album, The First / Real Live Concert, which sold 30,000 copies by the end of 2007.[11] The group also embarked on their Want You tour, visiting five cities: Incheon, Daegu, Changwon, Jeonju and Busan.[12]

Their first mini-album Always (August 2007) marked several changes for the group. Increasing control over their music, group leader G-Dragon began writing lyrics and creating compositions.[13] The mini-album also saw the introduction of electronic music for Big Bang. Receptions were fairly positive, most notably in regards to the song "Lies" (Korean: 거짓말).[14] Released as the lead single, it became their first song to reach the number-one spot. Their second mini album, Hot Issue (November 2007), mirrored its predecessor's success: the lead-single "Last Farewell" (Korean: 마지막 인사) topped various music charts, including Juke-On's chart for eight consecutive weeks.[15] It also won the "Song of the Month Digital Music Award" from Cyworld. Tickets for their Big Bang Is Great concert were also reportedly sold out in 10 minutes.[16] However, the members were hospitalized from over-performing and exhaustion,[17] halting their promotional activities. Reports were later released that Big Bang's albums and singles were in high demand, causing the record company to reprint and repackage them for re-release.[18] Riding on the success of their mini-album, the group collected numerous awards towards the end of the year, including "Best Male Group" and "Song Of The Year" from the 2007 M.NET/KM Music Festival.[19] They later claimed the "Artist of the Year" award from the 17th Seoul Music Awards.[20]

Near the end of 2007, Big Bang ventured overseas to Japan. Their first Japanese EP For the World (January 2008)[21] charted at the number-10 spot on the Oricon chart, despite lack of promotions.[22] The group also held a concert at the JCB Hall in Tokyo Dome City. Their second Japanese mini album, With U (May 2008) drew controversy for the group when its lead-single of the same name was stated to have similarities to singer Joe's song "Ride Wit U" from his album, And Then...[23]

Big Bang returned to Korea after promotions in Japan ended. Although group activities were delayed due to solo projects, their third mini-album Stand Up (August 2008) was released. Featuring Daishi Dance and the Korean rock-band No Brain for several songs, Stand Up went on to exceed the 100,000 mark in sales. "Day By Day" (Korean: 하루하루), the lead single, topped several online charts and held the number-one position for six consecutive weeks.[24] Following the lead single's success, other songs also charted within the Top 20, with "Heaven" at the number-two spot, "Oh My Friend" being ninth, "A Good Man" at twelfth and "Lady" being sixteenth — a total of five songs in the Top 20 for the group.[25]

During the release of their Korean materials, Big Bang released the Japanese song "Number 1" from their album of the same name, performing the song on Japanese radio programs and TV shows; the album peaked at #3 on the Japan's Oricon daily album chart. Their Korean follow-up album, Remember (November 2008) yielded the number-one single "Sunset Glow" (Korean: 붉은노을), though its secong single "Strong Baby", which was Seungri's solo song, did not fare as strongly. Shortly after, Big Bang received their second "Artist of the Year" award from the 2008 M.NET KM Music Festival award ceremony.[26] At the end of 2008, it was reported that Big Bang earned a total of 36 billion (USD$ 24.5 million).[27]

2009—Present: Branching out

With the group on break in early 2009, the members pursued solo activities. They later reunited to collaborate with their label's new girl group 2NE1, who has been dubbed "The Female Big Bang",[28] for the song "Lollipop". A music video was also filmed for promotion. Initially used to promote a cell phone, "Lollipop" has since reached the number-one spot on various online charts.[29]

After activities for "Lollipop" ended, the group flew to Japan to record and release their first physical Japanese single, "My Heaven", which debuted at the number three spot on the Oricon Charts.[30] A Japanese translation of their Korean single "Heaven" (Korean: 천국) from their mini-album Stand Up, the music was composed by acclaimed Japanese composer Daishi Dance.[12] To promote the single, the group performed on several Morning News programs. Their second Japanese single, "Gara Gara Go!!" (ガラガラ GO!!?)was released[31][32] on July 8, 2009 and charted at the number-five.[30] "Gara Gara Go!!" marked the group's first performances on some of Japan's major music shows, such as Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ and Music Station.[citation needed] Following the release of the singles, Big Bang released their self-titled first full-length Japanese album under Universal Music, which charted in at number three.[30]

After their Japanese promotional activities ended, Big Bang returned to Korea, where the members dissolved into solo activities. On August 18, G-Dragon released his controversial debut album Heartbreaker, which spawned several hit singles including its titled song.[33] Taeyang released two digital singes, "Where U At?" and "Wedding Dress", to promote his second album, which has an expectant release day of early 2010.[34] Additionally, T.O.P joined the cast of the Korean thriller drama Iris.[35] They later reunited to record the song "Koe o Kikasete" for the Japanese drama Ohitorisama (おひとりさま One Person?).[12][36][37] The song was later released as a single, peaking at number 4.[38].

For several days in January, Big Bang staged their 2010 Big Bang Concert Big Show[39] in the Seoul Olympic Stadium.[40] The following month, they embarked on their Electric Love tour in Japan.[41] The group returned in February, with the release of "Lollipop Pt.2", the follow up to their single, "Lollipop", with 2NE1. Similarly the song was used to coincide with promotions for LG Cyon's Lollipop phone.[42] The song proved to be popular, instantly reaching number one on digital charts.[43] Following on, the group received the 'Best 5 New Artists' award from the 24th Japan Gold Disc Awards.[44]

Yang Hyun Suk, YG Entertainment's Founder, confirmed that an album is plan to be release this summer.[41] While the group is on hiatus, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri will be working on solo projects[45] while Taeyang will be continuing promotions for his album.[46]

Artistry and influences

Throughout their career, Big Bang received praise and criticism alike. Time magazine described them as one of the "most promising" South Korean act to venture into Japan[12] while the Korea Times declared them "the icons of Korean pop [music]."[47] Their contribution to their own materials early in their career, most notably by G-Dragon, also garnered praises, with singer Baek Jiyoung stating that she "like[s] idol singers if they are like Big Bang."[48] However, the group have underwent criticism for plagiarism: their song "With U" was deemed to sound similar to Joe's "Ride Wit U" from his album, And Then...[23]

Musical styles

During the early days of their career, Big Bang's music were predominately hip hop, although they incorporated R&B songs into their albums as well. Their mini-album Always was noted for its change of musical styles from their previous efforts, with the group experimenting with electronic music and setting it as the new music trend in Korea.[49] G-Dragon later stated that they hope "to reach even more fans" with the new direction.[50] In 2008, they recorded the song "Oh My Friend", a rock-based song, with the Korean rock-band No Brain.[51] In an interview, the group also expressed interests in covering the music genre trot.[52]

Although their roots are tied with hip-hop music, the members have branched out to do various styles for solo projects. Taeyang's mini-album Hot was a mainly a collection of R&B songs, with the singer stating that the genre was his "main focus."[53] Daesung's first digital single, "Look at Me, GwiSun" (Korean: 날 봐, 귀순), was a trot song, which drew criticisms due to Big Bang's image as "hip-hop artists".[54] For his debut album Heartbreaker, G-Dragon incorporated a mix of dance, hip-hop, and R&B songs.[55]

Following the release of Always, G-Dragon began involving himself with the production of the group's materials,[56] penning the lyrics and composing the songs "Lie," "Last Farewell," and "Day By Day." His involvement was praised by the Korea Times, who described him as a "genius singer-songwriter."[47] G-Dragon himself described the group as "an idol group not born of talent but through effort."[57]

Dance style

Big Bang is choreographed by world-class choreographer Shaun Evaristo and Lyle Beniga,[58] although Seungri has been noted to choreographed some of the dance moves for their song "Day by Day."[59] While they once relied heavily on street dancing for their moves, Big Bang have made a transition towards more choreographed one. Their dance moves has been widely copied and covered. One of the moves, which incorporates the group lifting their shirts to expose their abdomens, quickly gained popularity online and became one of the top searches and widely copied dance moves on the internet.[60]

Image and cultural impact

Big Bang's influence extends beyond the music industry, shaping major trends in the fashion industry.[3] Dubbed as the "Big Bang fashion", their style has gained a following throughout Asia.[6] The group first adopted the "hip-hop" image concept for their debut, garnished with baggy clothes and slanted caps; Taeyang even sported cornrows. The release of Always was accompanied by a change in image, with the group leaning towards a more preppy-punk style, donning modern day fashion such as skinny jeans with Converse or high-top sneakers. Taeyang also traded his cornrows for a faux hawk.[61] While the group is market as a typical "teen idol," the release of their mini-album Stand Up portrayed the members in a "more mature appearance,"[62] stating that they wish to make the transition from "boys to men."[63] Seen in brands such as Bape, 10 deep, Louis Vuitton, and Phenomenon, Big Bang also wear customized printed hoodies for much of their performance or music videos.[6] They were also credited for bringing back the old school fashion, high-top shoes into the mainstream, such as the Nike and Reebok high-top shoes.[64] Described as the "most fashionable" one in the group,[65] G-Dragon is known to sport triangular scarves that were later nicknamed the "Big Bang scarves".[6] T.O.P also gained a following for his signature use of wearing sunglasses during performances, most notably shutter shades.[6]

Their styles later manifested itself onto the internet fashion portals,[66] making them one of the most sought after artists for endorsement products.[67] Big Bang have been endorsing Fila products since 2006, as well as the Korean online FPS titled Sudden Attack, where each member made their own characters and voice overs. The group also released their own fragrance, "BB Bud's My First Fragrance" (Korean: 나의 첫번째 향기), in early 2007.[68] In 2009, they released the book Shouting to the World, where the members wrote about the difficulties in their career. The book became a best-seller in South Korea.[57][69]

Due to their success in South Korea, Big Bang influenced the creation of the Chinese boy band OkBang, who were stated to have "many similarities to Big Bang in terms of musical style, wardrobe and hairstyles."[70] In 2010, the group's Big Show concert was chosen by the South Korean Touristic Committee for their Visit Korea from 2010—2012 campaign, stating that they will "have a big economic impact on the country."[71]
