Billy-bob teeth, Novelty teeth or Fake teeth are an inexpensive novelty item sold in supermarkets, gas stations, and hobby outlets. They are designed to resemble the teeth of a stereotypicalredneck for humorous effect, containing exaggerated gaps between teeth, decay and having a slightly yellow discoloration. The molding putty insert is pliable and shapes itself in the pattern of the teeth of the first person who wears them, making it difficult for multiple people to use the same set. They are primarily for use along the upper row of teeth.
Billy-bob teeth come in a variety of styles, such as one for women called Betty-bob teeth.Even more crooked and discolored sets have been marketed as caveman teeth, and Billy-bob gums, a toothless variety which sometimes contain fake piercings.
The product was created by Dr. Rich Bailey and Jonah White of Calhoun County, Illinois, a small rural peninsula at the convergence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers about 45 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri.Dr. Rich Bailey was attending dental school when he invented Billy-bob teeth, an experiment with surplus dental prosthetics. His friend from childhood and teammate from the Calhoun County Warriors football team helped Dr. Bailey to market the product throughout the world. One of the first businesses to sell their teeth was the Illinois River Dock Restaurant in the village of Hardin, Illinois.Billy-bob Teeth grew rapidly, becoming the largest private employer in the county. This ended when production moved to Asia.
