Bimbo Boy (born
1984 in
Sandviken, Sweden), is a
Swedish disco singer-songwriter. His single
"Drama Queen" was part of
Melodifestivalen 2005 and
eventually climbed to number three on the singles chart of the

video centered on "Drama Queen" in 2006 that became a big
iPod hit.

and grew up in the small town of
Sandviken in central Sweden. Inspired
by his musically talented family, Boy started singing at an early
age. As he grew, he became influenced by classic
Hollywood movies of the 1950s and
disco music of the 1980s, including
Italo disco.
Career
Boy launched his career in the gay community of Sandviken. Seeking
to "get some kind of discussion started" with a provocative
stage name, Boy
chose Bimbo Boy as a performer pseudonym. The bimbo portion was
taken from the media's identification of
Kylie Minogue,
Marilyn
Monroe, and
Samantha Fox as being
bimbos to dismiss the seriousness of the work of
these performers.
In 2002, Boy wrote and recorded his first songs "You (Are My Life)"
and "I Won't Do It For Free". "You (Are My Life)" expresses the
desire of a man wanting his lover to remain in a relationship but
then goes through various emotions when he himself is told to
leave. "I Won't Do It For Free" is about seduction by a male
prostitute demanding more than money as expressed in the theme,
"Don't pay me in cash, I want diamonds you see." Both singles are
set to plastic disco music.
Tapping into a new trend on the Internet, Boy self-released the two
singles in June 2002. In addition to developing a fan base, the
release resulted in producers contacted Boy with a goal of forming
a working relationship. It would take three years for a such a
relationship to germinate, but in the summer of 2005 Måns Ek &
Istvan Stenberg produced and released Boy's first single "Je Suis
Une Superstar". This single lead to a collaboration with songwriter
Anders Dannvik, who had a string of successes, including at
Melodifestivalens 1991,
1993,
1995,
1999, and
2003.
Drama Queen
The Dannvik-Boy collaboration produced "Drama Queen", whose
provocative lyrics convey a deep message to a plastic disco music.
The song conveys the feelings of a man who wants to be accepted for
who he is, regardless of his drama queen stereotypical image. This
disparate group of elements was entered in
Melodifestivalen 2005, the Swedish
pre-selection event to the
Eurovision Song Contest. "Drama
Queen" successful run at Melodifestivalen 2005 ended in the
quarterfinals, ranking in the top 100 of the 3200 songs submitted
to the fest. "Drama Queen" then was released as a single and
climbed to number three on the singles chart of
CDON.com, the online
music store.
The success of the "Drama Queen" single lead to a partnership with
filmmaker
Johnny Wu.
Boy starred in an '80s-inspired single "Drama Queen" video by Wu,
using footage shot of himself performing in front of a plain
background in Sweden and sending the digital images to Wu in
Cleveland,
Ohio,
