The game begins with the airplane you are riding in crashing in the middle of the ocean. When you swim to the surface, you'll see there are flames all around and only one way to go, to the creepy-looking lighthouse in the middle of nowhere. Once inside, continue down to an old bathysphere. You enter the bathysphere and ride it down an automated course to, what a Mr. Andrew Ryan says over a short film, the underwater city of Rapture.
