Production

 .Bands that choose to perform concerts often make use of stage props and theatrics.^ Half the bands on your list don’t use Tremelo Picking, which is what makes a death metal band death metal.

 .Mayhem and Gorgoroth among other bands are noted for their controversial shows; which have featured impaled animal heads, mock crucifixions, medieval weaponry, and band members doused in animal blood.^ And what about Gorgoroth (at least back when Ghaal was in the band), come on, covering themselves in lamb’s blood and crucifying naked people during live shows is enough to earn them a spot!

Ohlin's suicide

On 8 April 1991, Mayhem vocalist Per Yngve "Pelle" Ohlin (aka 'Dead') committed suicide in a house shared by the band. Fellow musicians often described Ohlin as a quiet and introverted person, while his performances involved cutting himself, carrying around a dead crow, and wearing clothes that had been buried weeks prior to the event.[3][14]
He was found with slit wrists and a shotgun wound to the head; the shotgun was owned by Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth (aka 'Euronymous'). Ohlin's suicide note read "Excuse all the blood" and included an apology for firing the weapon indoors. Before calling the police, Aarseth went to a nearby store and bought a disposable camera to photograph the corpse, after re-arranging some items.[15] .One of these photographs was later stolen and used as the cover of a bootleg live album entitled Dawn of the Black Hearts.^ I learn to live with them and the number one rule is not to disturb them….if you are afraid of them, just make sure you use a bug spray to dispose of them.

Eventually, rumours surfaced that Aarseth made a stew with pieces of Ohlin's brain, and made necklaces with fragments of Ohlin's skull.[5] The band later denied the former rumour, but confirmed that the latter was true.[5][14] Additionally, Aarseth claimed to have given these necklaces to musicians he deemed worthy.[1] .Mayhem bassist Jørn Stubberud (aka 'Necrobutcher') noted that "people became more aware of the [black metal] scene after Dead had shot himself ...^ But since releasing their full length stuff they’ve been more typecast as Black Metal.

Aarseth's murder

Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas features Aarseth's last recordings; his murderer (Vikernes) performs alongside him.
On 10 August 1993, Varg Vikernes of Burzum murdered Mayhem guitarist Øystein Aarseth (aka 'Euronymous'). On that night, Vikernes and Snorre Ruch of Thorns travelled from Bergen to Aarseth's apartment in Oslo. Upon their arrival a confrontation began, which ended when Vikernes fatally stabbed Aarseth. .His body was found outside the apartment with twenty-three cut wounds – two to the head, five to the neck, and sixteen to the back.^ So I go another day, back to work, the pain is still in my head but it had also moved down into my neck, back and arms.

Black metal is a style of metal music that started in the early 1980s. Lyrics are often against religions such as Christianity. Various black metal bands have relations to satanism in their lyrics and even in outlook. Lyrics may also have subjects such as Paganism. The majority of black metal vocalists are male, although there are a few notable exceptions – for example Cadaveria, Astarte and Lucifugum.

Black metal is often divided into two waves. The first wave began in the early 1980s by bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate. Venom's first albums, Welcome to Hell and Black Metal are usually said to be the first black metal records. Second wave is the most popular wave of black metal and it started in the early 1990s. It started from Norway and includes bands such as Darkthrone, Enslaved, Burzum, Satyricon, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Immortal, and Emperor.

Black metal is also very controversial, especially in Norway. During the early 1990s, certain black metal musicians burned old churches in Norway. One of the people who was found guilty for burning churches, Varg Vikernes, was also found guilty for murdering Øystein Aarseth, a fellow black metal musician.[1]

National Socialist black metal

National Socialist black metal (also known as Nazi black metal or NSBM) is a title used to refer to black metal acts with an emphasis on Nazi beliefs in their music. For example Absurd and Nokturnal Mortum are National Socialist black metal bands.
