Black River House is a property in Southern
Ireland which currently
stands deserted on the banks of the Black River (Abhainn Dubh -
Gaelic) in the small village of
Kildubhan. This large 17th century farm
building achieved notoriety when it became the site of a multiple
murder and suicide in 1992, the so-called "Black River House
Murders". On November 20th 1992 the first English owner of the
house since its creation, John Victor Marchant, killed his wife
Carole and their three children, Jake, Otis and Lucille in their
sleep before hanging himself.
The story is currently being
publicised by an investigative website,
[1414], which has the stated aim
of investigating what its editor regards as the unsolved aspects of
the case. It also highlights the story of a band named "The Secret
Method', who are alleged to have gone missing while trespassing on
the empty house in 1996. Their intention was to spend six months
creating an experimental album, imbued with the atmosphere of the
infamous location. Within weeks all contact from the band ceased.
On March 14th police forced entry and found their equipment still
running, but no trace of the band.
