Black Stool, a grindcore (debated to be either a precursor or derivative of death metal) band from the central Connecticut region.
Formed in late 2005, primarily in jest, the band originally consisted of dual vocalists Chip McCabe and Kenny Albert, guitarist Mike Polce, and drummer Mike McDonald.
They drew upon their vast background of old school grindcore as influences to devise simple, fast, and short tracks in the vein of early grindcore bands such as Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Assuck, and more recent bands such as Nasum and Pig Destroyer.
By early 2006, they had completed their first self-produced, self-promoted, and self-released CD, Aborted Due to Lack of Activity.
Shortly after the release of the first CD, Dennis Morin was enlisted to play bass for the band, providing a much-needed sonic boost to the band's somewhat thin guitar-dominated sound.
By June of 2006, the ammended lineup re-recorded 3 tracks from Aborted and a cover of Nasum's "Time to Act!" as a memorial to Nasum's vocalist/guitarist Mieszko Talarzyk, who was killed by the Indian Ocean tsunami, for an EP to commemorate 6-6-06.
During this time, Black Stool had performed with a variety of touring and local Connecticut acts.
Most notably opening for Vancouver, Canada's 3 Inches of Blood, where their style received much honorable mention from their vocalist Jamie Hooper.
Other acts that they have performed with are Catalyst, Conifer, Nadir, Seagrave, What Weapons Bring War, and Anal Cunt when they recently toured in late 2006, just to name a few.
Eventually, Mike McDonald would leave the band in 2006 to focus on other priorities in his life.
He was replaced by Chris Barry, whose nickname "7 Bands", seems almost appropriate.
Previous to joining Black Stool, he played bass for Torrington, CT's On Paths of Torment, as well as filling in on drums for Torrington, CT's Necrosis for a short period.
Other projects of his include ambient space metal project Mulder, grindcore band Starcrossed Faggots and Gary, the latter with members of Catalyst, and indie band Arms and the Man, I Sing.
His enthusiasm for his work seemed to bring a lot more energy into the band, evident in just the few performances this newest lineup has had.
Black Stool hopes to have more material recorded for a new CD sometime in 2007.
