Blackfathom Depths is a location set in Blizzard Entertainments video game and book series, Warcraft. In the MMORPG World of Warcraft it acts as an instance dungeon in the virtual world.

Background

Blackfathom Deeps is located in the Zoram Strand area in Ashenvale on the continent of Kalimdor. Once a glorious temple dedicated to the Night Elves' moon-goddess, Elune, the great Sundering shattered the temple - sinking it beneath the waves of the Veiled Sea. There it remained untouched until, drawn by its ancient power, the Naga and Satyr emerged to plumb its secrets. Legends hold that the ancient beast, Aku'mai, a favored pet of the primordial Old Gods has taken up residence within the temple's ruins, preying on the area ever since. Drawn to Aku'mai's presence, the cult known as the Twilight's Hammer has also come to bask in the Old Gods' evil presence.

Nomenclature

While geographical short forms are highly varied in any MMORPG, the most common shortforms referring to the Blackfathom Deeps is "BFD", or alteratively, "Blackfathom".

Instance zone

Blackfathom Deeps is a moderately-sized instance dungeon designed for players level 27 through 29. For Alliance players who choose to play as Night Elves, it will be the first dungeon readily available, though many choose to travel to Westfall to explore The Deadmines, which is a lower level instance with players typically between the levels 17 and 23.

The enemies found within the Blackfathom Deeps include the Naga, Satyr, numerous types of turtles, members of the Twilight's Hammer cult, and numerous bosses, such as Aku'mai, the great hydra.

Before attempting Aku'mai, players need to clear the room before its lair and light up 4 fires. Players should take caution in lighting up all four fires simultaneously, as each fire releases either 2 high level elites, 4 mid level elites, or 8 non elites.

Players of the Horde also have several quests in the zone which give very good rewards for their level (up to 29), as well as a particularly good sword for warriors.
