Blake Mitchell is a
quarterback for the
South
Carolina Gamecocks football team.
During the 2005 season,
Blake Mitchell was diagnosed with a minor case of down-syndrome
making it ever more remarkable that he is the starting quarterback
for a Division I powerhouse.
On
September 13,
2006, South Carolina coach,
Steve Spurrier,
suspended Mitchell after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a
bouncer at a bar in Columbia.
On
September 15, the charges against Mitchell
were dropped, and he was reinstated to the team though no longer as
the starting quarterback.
[352]On
November 4,
2006, Mitchell was inserted back into action, replacing
an ineffective
Syvelle Newton in the second half against
then 12th ranked Arkansas. Down 26-6 at the half Mitchell rallied
the Gamecocks with touchdown drives of 92 and 99 yards. The
comeback attempt fell just short as the South Carolina lost
26-20.
The following Monday Spurrier named Mitchell the starter
for the game against 4th ranked
Floridaon
November 11. Blake had a
solid performance in the game, but the Gamecocks lost 17-16 to the
eventual national champions. Two weeks later, however, Mitchell
again had a solid performance and rallied his team to defeat the
Clemson
Tigers in
Death Valley, 31-28. This victory
was South Carolina's first against Clemson since 2001.
On
December 29, 2006, Mitchell led South Carolina to victory in the
AutoZone Liberty Bowl over
Houston and was named the most
valuable player by completing 19 of 29 passes for 319 yards, and
four touchdowns, which is a Liberty Bowl record.
