The Blue Whalers are a group of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and
Virginia guys who make an annual pilgrimage to Ocean City, MD for a
long weekend, typically in early August. The majority of the group
are Penn State graduates who originally met one another at the
Berks Campus, and graduated from University Park in 2002 and 2003.
The name originates from a large wooden "Blue Whale" sign which
guarded the Sea Spray Motel in Ocean City MD on 35th street, which
housed the Blue Whalers for the first two trips in 2001 and
2004.
The Blue Whale trip has taken place 5 times to date, and
will occur for a sixth time from August 1st to August 4th
2008.
Original Blue Whalers: The following BW members
broke ground in 2001 with a torturous 5 hour drive from Chester
County, PA to Ocean City, MD early in August 2001, with all five
members and their gear stuffed into a Jeep Wrangler. A "MOM" sign
(actually and Opie and Anthony W.O.W. sign turned upside down),
Nsync's greatest hits and 4-5 fast food stops highlighted the
drive. This drive alone laid the foundation for subsequent Blue
Whale trips.
Shoe "Shoe" Steve "Pikes" Dave "Dave" - BW
organizer ('01, '04, '05, '06, '07) Matt "Mash" Jake "Snake /
Snaker"
The original BW trip was only one night, but it was the
conception of an annual tradition.
2002 and 2003
The
Whaleless years College graduation and out of state moves by
multiple Blue Whalers created a hiatus of the Blue Whale
trip.
2004
During the spring of 2004 BW organizer Dave
set the wheels in motion for a second Blue Whale trip. The
following constituted the Blue Whalers in 2004.
Steve Dave
Jake Shoe (came all the way from Rhode Island for the trip)
Mash Sohail Donnie Ryan "Chums"
The trip was highlighted
by a thrown water melon rein which inadvertently damaged a passing
car. The assailant offered $100 to the victims (2 80 year old
women), while Sohail offered moral support.
The other "instant
classic" of the trip was now infamous "flip that F*&%in'
table".
The Blue Whalers were also verbally abused by a passing
5 year old who called the group a bunch of losers.
2005
Enter the Sea Terrace The Blue Whalers moved their home for the
2005 trip to the Sea Terrace on 88th street for the 2005 trip, as
the Sea Spray Motel was sold and demolished for condo development.
The 2005 trip saw the Blue Whale T-Shirts make their first
appearance, which were a major hit on the streets of OCMD and at
The Green Turtle, Fager's Island, and of course Seacrets. The 2005
trip had the largest contingent to date consisting of the following
members.
Dave Gundy Steve Don Jake Mobes Mash Benny Sohail Chums
Mikey Ricky
2006
The Blue Whalers returned to the Sea
Terrace in 2006, once again sporting the BW T-shirts. The '06 group
consisted of the following:
Dave Steve Jake Mash Shoe
Don Sohail Mikey Chums Ricky
Highlights: Pile of
rocks, Life guard stands, and Amaco/Arabian Prince
2007
The Whalers embarked on the 2007 Trip and again took shelter at
the Sea Terrace. '07 memebrs included the following:
Dave
Gundy Steve Jake Mash Don Shoe
The smallest BW trip
to date, however, not with out notable occurances. Some highlights
included a "pantsing" on Coastal Highway at approximately 11 AM on
a Sunday morning. The first night of BW 2007 included the Whalers
making new friends with "Wayne" and his wife. The Whalers new 40
something friends were characters to say the least. An act of
vandalism on a taxi by the "BW mascot" led to Mash shelling out $60
to "pay off the cab driver". The same BW mascot was asked to leave
Macky's a night later for playing DJ at the end of the
evening.
2008
The Blue Whalers are returning in 2008
for another long weekend in OCMD. The line up is as strong as ever
and growing as the trip approaches. The '08 line up consist of the
