The BookGlutton Reader

BookGlutton is a Web 2.0 community where people come to read,
chat and comment on books contextually. The BookGlutton.com
Unbound Reader combines aspects of a book group, a
chatroom, and an ebook; members of the
community can discuss what is being read in real time or
asynchronously. BookGlutton.com was founded by Travis Alber and
Aaron Miller on April 25th, 2007. User registration is free.
There is no charge to read public-domain or most user-uploaded
work.

FEATURES

There are three main components of the BookGlutton site: The Main Site,
the Upload Tool and the Unbound Reader.

The main site has a number of social networking features, including profile
management, friendlists, and tagging. The main site is also the vehicle for searching
the Catalog for work. BookGlutton's Catalog is comprised of public domain
work, contemporary work, and user uploaded work.

The Upload tool provides a method for users to add content to the Catalog. It allows users to convert existing documents (in RTF
or XHTML) into a format the Reader can use and add them to the Catalog. The Upload Tool also
provides a downloadable version of the work in the IDPF's .epub format.

The Unbound Reader provides a platform for conversation within the book. It has two methods of
conversation. The "proximity chat," is a real time conversation bound by a user's
location with a document. For example, setting the filter to
"within this chapter" limits the chat room occupants to others
within the same chapter. The shared comments section, also integrated with the book, an asynchronous comment and reply system. User's can click on any paragraph in the text and either read a comment already attached to that paragraph, or create a new one.

USES

A number of groups use BookGlutton, particularly those related to education, creative writing, or reading; BookGlutton is partnering with teachers, librarians, writers and book clubs.
