Google Idol (or
Gidol) is an
online amateur
lip-syncing contest. Since its inception in
March 2006, it has been a global phenomenon, garnering
over 1 million hits.
About
Gidol was created by
Australian Ben
Petro, a 27 year old
IT consultant. Contestants post their entries
on
Google
Video, which serves as the repository for all the content. The
contest is split into five genres:
Rock,
Pop,
Kids,
Original and
Gay. Within each genre, the
entries are sorted into
web-cam or
music videos, to form two different
competitions.
Videos are put into competition in a simple
head-to-head format and competition rounds run for one week, in
which time the visitors to the site vote for their favourite of the
two. The winning video at the end of the week progresses to the
next round until the Grand Final when the
Official Gidol is announced.
