Encyclopedia

The Boston University Cricket Club, commonly referred to as BUCC, is the official cricket club of Boston University. It consists of an active member body exceeding well over 50 students. Due to a lack of facilities available during the week, BUCC practises indoors at the Sargent Gym (1 University Road).

History

Boston University is known to have had a cricket club as far back as the early 1990s. However, that club only existed for a few years and it was almost a decade before another was established.

In summer of 2002, a group of BU cricket enthusiasts started playing regularly at Cambridgeport, organized by Ravi Shroff. A year later, Nitin Bangera, Brian Burton, Ali Imtiaz and Chintan Patel applied for official recognition by the university. In September, 2003, the new Boston University Cricket Club was founded.

In the years that followed, BUCC slowly consolidated itself, gaining equipment, a strong member base and winter indoor venues of TTC and Sargent Gym. In the early 2000's, there were already many teams in the Boston area, comprised largely of expatriate Indians, British, West Indians, Pakistanis, Australians and the occasional Americans. For its first official season, BU played 13 games with a record of 4-9.

Rebirth

The club was founded in 2003 by Nitin Bangera, Brian Burton, Ali Imtiaz, Chintan Patel. The first captain was Raj Putatunda, who captained the team until May 2007. The early days saw the team struggle most of the time, with sporadic practises at the Sargent Gym and the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. In 2005 however, the club experienced a surge of new players, boosting the club’s morale and leading to practises with scores of players appearing for practise matches (albeit indoors). BUCC is involved in an annual BU Indians v. BU Pakistanis cricket match, held usually in April of each year. The annual showpiece match is the club’s highlight of the spring season as it attracts many from BU’s Indian Club as well as Organisation of Pakistani Students. In addition, various members of the faculty and staff come to enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere that is filled with fun and games (including tug-of-war, dunk booths and a wide array of food) on the side as the match progresses.

Today

Historically, the team has been predominated by students from the Asian subcontinent, with some from the United Kingdom coming occasionally. Today, the club enjoys very similar demographics and an unprecedented skill level among the top dozen or so players, making selection nearly unpredictable for a few spots. As of fall 2007, the club stands healthier than ever before – with a revamped website, new team jerseys as well as renewed enthusiasm, BUCC stands with a future that leaves many interested in learning more about the club.
