Bottom is an expression, commonly used in England in the 18th and 19th centuries, and still in use, to refer to characteristics such as reliability, staying-power, dignity, integrity and soundness of judgement.
A person deficient in these characteristics is said to "lack bottom."
Bottom is a characteristic valued in politicians, naval and military officers and Anglican bishops.
