History behind Brent
Brent House was named after Charles Henry Brent who graduated from Trinity College School to become a Chaplain in the US Army, and later a Missionary Bishop of the Philippines in 1902.
While he served in the Philippines, he made great strides in establishing Christianity in a set of extremely multicultural series of islands.
He also took a strong stance against the opium trade which thrived at the time.
In 1918, Charles Henry Brent accepted a position as the Bishop of Western New York, where he voiced his opinions on the necessity of Christian Unity saying that, <blockquote>"The unity of Christendom is not a luxury, but a necessity.
The world will go limping until Christ's prayer that all may be one is answered.
We must have unity, not at all costs, but at all risks. unified Church is the only offering we dare present to the coming Christ, for in it alone will He find room to dwell."</blockquote> He helped to organize the first World Conference on Faith and Order in Switzerland during 1927.
Charles Henry Brent died in 1929, the same year that Trinity College School experienced its second fire which destroyed most of the school.
Brent House was established in 1930, followed shortly by Bethune House in the same year, making Brent House the oldest house at Trinity College School.
