Doherty is notable as the only member of the Republican Party in the Chicago City Council, but supports the policies of Chicago's Democratic Mayor Richard M. Daley. Doherty voted in favor of the Mayor's controversial parking meter plan that leases out the revenue rights to a private firm[1]. According to the Chicago Tribune, the plan would increase the hourly meter rate in Chicago to $6.50 in 2013[2].
During his 2007 re-election bid, Doherty was apparently video taped at a bar consuming alcohol to the point of intoxication and driving home under the influence. The tape was given to WGN News, who ran a story about the incident. [3] During the interview, Doherty acknowledged that after playing basketball with friends, he would regularly go out and have a "couple beers." He also stated he frequently drove home from the establishment on those nights. When asked if he was drunk, the Alderman said he wasn't because of his body type and the duration of his stay in the bar. Doherty was never charged, and he went on to win re-election that year.
According to a September 2009 article in the Chicago Tribune, Doherty's long time friend and political apprentice, Dominick Owens, was arrested and charged with accepting bribes as a zoning inspector in Chicago [4]. Described as the "Political Godfather" of Owens in the article, Doherty was a sponsor of Owens while he appeared on the "Clout List" of Mayor Daley's former patronage chief Robert Sorich, who was convicted in 2006 for his role in a hiring scam in Chicago City Hall[5].
Doherty claimed to have no knowledge of Owens' questionable business practices, saying, " I always thought he was smarter than that" [6]. Doherty did not clarify whether his statement referred to Owens' alleged wrongdoings or his misfortune in getting caught. Owens was released from jail on a $4,500 signature bond on September 22, 2009[7].
Doherty has also been a vocal proponent of Reverend Wilfredo De Jesus, a former Aldermanic candidate in Chicago's 26th Ward who came under fire for his virulently homophobic public statements [8].
Doherty was a Chicago Golden Gloves boxer in 1973, 1974 and 1975, and was a Golden Gloves Finalist and Champion.[citation needed] He was a Chicago Park District Champion as a boxer from La Follette Park.[citation needed]
