Brian Marren (born 29 July 1964, Liverpool, England) is the 9th Earl Of Kensington. He is a hereditary peer in the British House of Lords, and is known for his Labour Party sympathies and his avid support for trade unions. One of the few remaining hereditary peers left in the Lords since Prime Minister Blair's sweeping changes to that body's compositional structure in 1999, Lord Marren traces his lineage back to the 11th Century and the original Earl of Kensington, Pierce Marren, a commander in William the Conqueror's forces at Hastings. Educated at Eton and St. John's College, at Oxford University where he was awarded a D.Phil in History in 1990. He is regarded by his colleagues as a respected scholar, and is often deferred to when there is a question in chambers regarding matters of British history. Lord Marren is also well known for his witty repartee with fellow peers and the press, and is often regarded as a favourite within Britain's entertainment community. Well liked because of his often self-deprecating sense of humour, he has worked on numerous charitable projects in conjunction with noted British comedians, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, and fellow Liverpudlian, Ricky Tomlinson. A rabid fan of blues music and rock and roll, he has also done charitable work with various rock and roll artists such as Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Sir Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards. An avid musician, he also enjoys sailing, sculling, reading, and polo.
