Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited,[1] (Chinese: 華晨中國汽車控股有限公司)[2] (FWB: CBA), (SEHK: 1114) is a publicly owned, Chinese investment holding company, making automobiles, automotive components and minibuses,[3] based in Liaoning province,[4] and listed on the Frankfurt and Hong Kong stock exchanges. As of 2009, it was the eighth-largest automaker in China.[5]

The origins of today's modern Brilliance can be traced to a state-owned auto factory, which, under the guiding hand of the infamous Yang Rong became a leading Chinese maker of mini-buses[4] during the 1990s.[6] The Chinese State continues to retain ownership in Brilliance.[5]

Alongside many Chinese automakers looking to enter the US market Brilliance has postponed such plans but has sold in Europe, however.[7]

Brilliance sells under at least seven brand names, including minibuses under the Jinbei and Granse brands, and sedans under the Zhonghua, Zunchi, Junjie, Kubao, and BMW brands.[1][8]

In 2003 BMW and Brilliance signed a deal for the production of sedans in China.[3] These vehicles may differ significantly from those sold in other markets under the same names. Under a Technical Assistance Agreement with BMW AG, BMW will provide engineering consulting services to the production of the Zhonghua sedan.[citation needed] At the start of the manufacturing, a team of engineers from the German company was stationed at the Shenyang facilities to assist in initialization of its production processes.[citation needed]

While the company also manufactures gasoline engines and certain other automotive components, such as window moldings, stamped parts and axles, etc,[9] automobile manufacture is performed by the subsidiaries Shenyang Brilliance JinBei Automobile Co Ltd[10] and BMW Brilliance Automotive Co Ltd,[11] in which Brilliance has 51%[1] and 49.5%[11] ownership, respectively.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Co Ltd manufactures BMW branded automobiles for sale in the Chinese market,[11] while Shenyang Brilliance JinBei Automobile Co Ltd products are sold under the JinBei,[12] Granse,[12] Zunchi,[13] and Junjie brands.[13]

Production bases and facilities

BMW-branded autos are made at a plant in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang,[5][14] officially opened on May 20, 2004.[15]

Construction of a second BMW plant is scheduled to start in 2010.[5]

Huachen Automotive Group Holdings

As of December, 2009, Huachen Automotive Group Holdings Company Limited, (Chinese: 華晨汽車集團控股有限公司) has majority ownership of Brilliance, controlling 55% of the company.[2]

European crash test

In 2007, Brilliance's BS6 sedan performed so poorly in a German ADAC crash test, earning 1 out of 5 possible stars.[16][17] Brilliance later redesigned the car and it saw better performance in a different, Spanish crash test.[18]
