Brit Insurance Holdings N.V. (LSE: BRE) ) is the parent company of an international general insurance and reinsurance group specialising in commercial insurance. It is a financially strong public company listed on the London Stock Exchange and quoted on the FTSE 250 Index.

The Company was founded as Benfield & Rea Investment Trust in 1995.[1] In 1996 it acquired Stewart Syndicates Limited and in 1999 it went on to buy Wren PLC.[1] In 1999 it ceased to be an investment trust and relisted as Brit Insurance Holdings PLC.[1] In 2007 it was included, for the first time, in the FTSE4Good Index.[1] At the end of 2009, pursuant to a scheme of arrangement under the Companies Act 2006 of the United Kingdom, all publicly held shares in the group's listed parent company at the time were cancelled and the former holders of those shares were issued (depositary interests representing) shares in the group's new parent company, Brit Insurance Holdings N.V., a Dutch public company that continued the former parent company's listing on the London Stock Exchange.

Brit Insurance has a diversified portfolio of businesses both in terms of geographic location and types of business, writing more than 70 classes of insurance worldwide. Business is written through two underwriting platforms - Brit Insurance Limited and Brit Syndicate 2987 at Lloyd's managed by Brit Syndicates Limited.[2]

The company is split into three Strategic Business Units - Brit Global Markets, Brit Reinsurance and Brit UK.

UK Regional offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Darlington, Glasgow, London, Reading, Leeds, Manchester and Belfast have been opened to support brokers throughout the country. The group has overseas operations in USA, Europe, Australia & Japan.

Brit Insurance sponsors Surrey County Cricket Club, including the Brit Insurance Oval at Kennington in London.[3] In May 2008 it entered a two-year broadcast deal with Sky Sports and became sponsors of Test Match cricket for 2008 and 2009 as well as the Cricket Writers on TV programme.[4]

In January 2008 a four-year sponsorship partnership with The Design Museum began. The sponsorship focuses around a new set of annual international awards with a supporting exhibition known as The Brit Insurance Design Awards and The Brit Insurance Designs of the Year exhibition.[5]

In January 2010 Brit Insurance will take over from Vodafone and become the sponsor of England Cricket Team under the terms of a four-year deal.[6]
