British History Online is a digital library of primary and secondary sources on medieval and modern history of the British Isles. It was created and is managed, as a cooperative venture by the Institute of Historical Research, the University of London and the History of Parliament Trust.[1]. One site review describes it thus:

(T)he site’s purpose is to offer an alternative to paid online services and nonreviewed Internet sites by bringing relevant materials together into a single, freely accessible online collection. The site is intended for academic and casual users, according to the site information. However it will be most useful for students of late medieval and early modern England, since most of the materials are from the period 1500 to 1850.[1]

Indeed a significant amount of information on English history within Wikipedia is attributed to British History Online, with search returns numbering in the tens of thousands.[2]
