The
Pittsburgh Steelers and the
Cleveland
Browns have a rivalry in the NFL that many fans have looked
into.

Classic picture of the Rivalry
A game to Remember in Pittsburgh
In October 4, 1952, the Browns overcame a 13 point deficit and a
stunning performance by
quarterback Jim Finks and end
Elbie Nickel for a 21-20
victory over the hated Steelers at
Forbes Field.
Otto Graham, who
could throw a little bit, hit
Dub Jones with a 47 yard
touchdown pass and
Sherman Howard with a
57 yarder to overcome that deficit, but what killed Pittsburgh was
a missed extra point, its fourth blocked PAT in two games. Those
were Graharn's second and third touchdown passes, the first he
flipped to
Marion Motley to avoid being trapped at his
own 32. Motley caught it at the 35 and steamed to the
end zone.

In 1996, 1997 and 1998, the Browns and Steelers did not play due to
Art Modell scandal.
The Scores between the Two
Currently the Steelers and the Browns have played 110 games against
each other. Both of them hold 55 wins against one and the other. As
the rivalry is tied. The Steelers, however have won 12 out of their
15th meeting against the Browns, even though the Browns mostly led
the rivalry in the past. The most unlikable game between the two is
when the Steelers beat the Browns 41-0 a couple of years ago.
@ Cleveland, November 23, 1986
Bernie Kosar's
36 yard pass to Webster Slaughter with 6:37 left in overtime
boosted the Browns to a 37-31 victory over the hated Steelers,
mathematically eliminating the Steelers earlier in the season than
at any time since 1969. Kosar consistently beat the Steelers
blitz on third down as the
Steelers
defense surrendered all time highs for total
yards (536), yards passing (414), and first downs (35). For the
first time all season, the Steelers did not record a
sack. The
Pittsburgh offense, by start contrast, had its best game of the
season, and when
Gary Anderson kicked a 40 yard field goal with
seven seconds remaining in regulation, the Steelers had forged a
31-31 tie. The Kosar to Slaughter pass came on Cleveland's second
possession of the overtime.
Trivia
- Bill Cowher,
current head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, once played for the
Cleveland Browns.
- In the midst of an October 1975 game between the two teams,
Steeler defensive tackle Joe Greene was ejected after he repeatedly
kicked Browns' offensive lineman Bob McKay in the groin.
- In their second meeting of the 1976 season, Steelers' quarterback Terry Bradshaw was
sacked by Browns' defensive end Joe Jones. Instead of merely
tackling Bradshaw, Jones lifted him up and slammed him head-first
into the Cleveland Stadium turf. Bradshaw would miss the next two
contests.
- The Browns and Steelers rivalry is one of the top 4 NFL
rivalries. This rivalry is tied most popular with the Chicago Bears and
Green
Bay Packers rivalry. While the 2 other rivalries are the
Jet-Dophins and Raiders-Broncos rivalry.
- The largest margin of victory for the Cleveland Browns is 51
points when the Browns beat the Steelers 51-0 on September 10,
1989 in Pittsburgh.
- The largest margin of victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers is 43
points when the Steelers beat the Browns 43-0 on September 12,
1999 in Cleveland.
