When Edwin first began the idea of Brutal there wasn't much of a script. It was more a few pages telling the story. He knew what he wanted from the beginning. He wanted something that felt raw and real. To keep up with this need for realism an official script was never written. It was a series of improvisation, ad libbing, and sit downs with the cast and crew that gave the film its dialog. All effects and stunts in the movie were performed by the cast and many corners were cut to make everything feel real.
"The movie tracks a group of ghost hunters/documentarians as they search for a reported haunted site along a riverbank in Caledonia, Wisconsin. While looking for the spot where a young boy who disappeared is rumored to appear, the group runs into the wrong person."[1]
Express Milwaukee ofered the film's "strongest points are its characters. No one in the movie is a professional, most of the dialogue was unscripted."[1] On September 11, 2008, the horror magazine Fangoria released an article on their website about the movie. Fangoria did an interview with Brutal star Paddy Fineran. "The budget didn’t provide for breakaway or padded walls or fake instruments of death. Concussions, broken bones and real blood were a daily outcome of shooting." - Paddy Fineran [2] On September 11, 2008, the Horror Society Film Festival's website also put up an article about Brutal.
On October 10, Mclain Kittleson, Edwin and Andrea Minch showed the trailer at the Horror Society convention at the Portage Theater in Chicago, Illinois. They were asked if "you will be doing another film" upon which Mclain responded with "it's up to the fans". The trailer received a standing ovation from the avid horror fans. Mclain responded with "there's your answer"
The film had its official premiere on October 30, 2008 in front of a sold out crowd at the Downer Theater.[1][2]
