Brutus is one of the fastest, most flexible remote password crackers you can get your hands on - it's also free. It is available for Windows 9x, NT and 2000, there is no UN*X version available although it is a possibility at some point in the future. Brutus was first made publicly available in October 1998 and since that time there have been at least 70,000 downloads and over 175,000 visitors to the website. Development continues so new releases will be available in the near future. Brutus was written originally to help me check routers etc. for default and common passwords.

Actuality

Despite the creators reasons for creating the program, which is to test router passwords and other
local networked computers, the software is clearly designed to check remote website password hache's, which is often done for malicious intent. While this does give computer security technicians and easy
way to test random networks, it does not rule out the numbers that will use it for malicious intent.

The author of the program which includes a FAQ in the program zip file that is not included publicly on the website. In the zip file, the "Overview.doc" file includes some questions and answers that give a view on the authors intentions of the program. The document includes these questions:

History of Use

Brutus is the most powerful, flexible, and popular brute forcer around and has been used by many people for years. It has been used to brute force password hache's from all kinda of websites from all around the world, but is mainly used for porn since password on pornography are generally extremely easy to crack. The only work a user would have to do is find a working username and update the password list to have a good chance at cracking a pornography website.
