The Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area is an area consisting of three counties – Erie, Cattaraugus and Niagara – in Western New York. It is the second-largest metropolitan area in the state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 1,254,066 (though a July 1, 2007 estimate placed the population at 1,214,163).[1] The metropolitan area has five principal cities – Buffalo (24.2% of the total MSA population), Amherst (9.3%), Cheektowaga (7.8%), Tonawanda (6.4%), and Niagara Falls (4.6%).[2]

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 1,170,111 people, 468,719 households, and 301,970 families residing within the MSA. The racial makeup of the MSA was 83.78% White, 11.71% African American, 0.67% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.23% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.90% of the population.
The median income for a household in the MSA was $38,352, and the median income for a family was $48,654. Males had a median income of $38,086 versus $25,589 for females. The per capita income for the MSA was $19,788.
