Butter Krust Bread is a North American bread company, primarily
distributed in the south-west. It was founded in
1915 by B. Frank Bastian as a bakery store.
In
1920 Bastian partnered with
Benjamin Apple to form a wholesale baking shop. In the 1930s the
two invested in a bread slicing machine and their store became the
first company to offer sliced bread east of the
Mississippi
River. By this point the brand Butter Krust was born. By the
1950s Butter Krust licensed the
Holsum brand from the
W.E. Long Company in Chicago and became the first bakery in the
region to market
cellophane-wrapped bread. Butter Krust was also
the first to use unbleached flour. By
1987 Butter Krust opened a distribution center in
Northumberland, Pennsylvania.
As of
2005 sales totaled more
than $80 million, but the following year the company was bought out
by the
Sara Lee
Corporation in the sum of $72 million. To date Butter Krust has won
several awards for their bread and is distributed under various
companies such as Flowers Foods in
Texas and Holsum in New England.
