Cañete La Real is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalucía in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 100 km, 62 Miles from Malaga capital. Cañete comes from the Arabic name Hisn Qanit, which means “castle of Qanit”, while others believe it refers to the caños, meaning "springs" that still flow in some parts of the urban district. The words La Real in the village name means "royal" which refers to the former Spanish king Alfonso XI. It has a population of approximately 2000 residents. The natives are called: Cañeteros. The local football team play in the Andalucian Regional League, Malaga Division 7. Its currently managed by British Ex Pat Alex Cottrell resident there since 2005. Who in the 2007-2008 season achieved the Teams greatest success by achieving the Double of having them promoted and gaining entry to the first stages of the Spanish Cup in the same year.
