Cabin John Middle School is a public school for students in grades 6, 7 and 8 located in Potomac, Maryland. However, due to a modernization project, students have been transferred to a holding school located on Tilden Lane in Rockville, Maryland until the renovation is completed in Summer 2011.

Cabin John opened in 1967 as a junior high school, and its mascot was the roadrunner. In 1987, the school closed due to a dwindling number of students. However, a sudden rise in the student population caused Cabin John to reopen in 1989. When it reopened, it became a middle school and its mascot became the cougar.

Students that attend Cabin John are from the feeder elementary schools Seven Locks, Bells Mill, Stone Mill and Cold Spring. The students that attended Bells Mill and Seven Locks Elementary Schools go on to attend Winston Churchill High School. Students from Cold Spring and Stone Mill Elementary Schools go on to attend Thomas Wootton High School. Currently, Cabin John MS is in a modernization project for the next two years.

  • Autumn 1998 - MSDE Guidance Department Award: This recognition was the first in Maryland for an entire guidance department. The award was especially important to the members of the guidance department because the state based the award on input from administrators, teachers, parents and students.
  • 1998 - FBI's Special Science Fair Award: Although many Cabin John students have won science fair awards at the county level, one young man received a special award from the FBI for building a working model of a bed that automatically makes itself by using a pulley system.
  • Spring 1999 - First prize in an anti-smoking campaign promoted by the State Attorney General's Office in conjunction with Maryland State Board of Education: Mrs. Falls (the art teacher) and students were presented a ceremonial award along with acknowledgment for the first prize billboard, located on Interstate 95 near Camden Yards.
  • 1998-1999 - Cabin John's Knowledge Master team placed 1st in the state and 38th in the world.

  • Fall 1999 - Art teacher Mrs. Falls received the Maryland State Middle School Art Award
  • Maryland Secondary Physical Education Teacher of the Year - This teacher was honored by Maryland Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Association.
  • Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in Gifted Education - Three teachers and an administrator have received this award. Meeting the needs of all gifted students is a vital concern at Cabin John.

Modernization

Cabin John is under major renovation, which will last from Summer 2009 to Summer 2011. Students have been transferred to a holding school located on Tilden Lane in Rockville, Maryland until the renovation is finished. The new building will be LEED certified as an environmentally friendly structure. It will also be entirely wireless.[1]

Cabin John Middle School (CJMS) is currently undergoing a reconstruction that is scheduled to be completed for reopening in August 2011 with an estimated cost of about $108 million. Demolition on the school began in July shortly after the completion of an asbestos abatement program.
