Dean was born in Cornwall, England. He grew up in Polruan, a small fishing village in East Cornwall, attending Polruan Primary School and later Fowey Community College.[1][2] His mother, Lorraine, is a teaching assistant and a nanny, and his father, Graham, works for a local harbour commissioner and is also a lighthouse keeper.[2][3] He has an older brother, Lewis.[2]
Dean heard about the National Youth Theatre in secondary school,[1][4] and, after successfully auditioning, stayed with the company from 2001 to 2005.[5] During this time he appeared in productions including The Threepenny Opera, Murder in the Cathedral and Hanging Around, at the National Theatre.[5]
From 2004 to 2007 Dean trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Acting.[5]
Dean made his professional debut in The Duchess (2008), opposite Keira Knightley.[2] He played Darren Mullet, his first lead role,[1] in the comedy-horror film Tormented (2009). Dean received critical acclaim for his performance in Tormented; Sky Movies said: "Best of the bunch is Dean as the put-upon Darren Mullet, imbuing his tragic monster with a touch of Boris Karloff pathos in the online clips of his living torment, and coming across quite menacing when returning to slice up his victims."[6]
Dean's television credits include Demons and Casualty.[4]
According to IMDB, Dean will star in the upcoming Comedy Drama Rundown Heights as Stewart Wilson.[7]
In August 2009, Dean made an appearance at the Frightfest at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square to introduce scenes and DVD extras from his movie Tormented (2009 film), in which he played the role of Darren Mullet, the most unpopular boy in school whose life is made hell by the in-crowd. He also took part in a Q&A about the film.
Dean is a supporter of Stonewall (UK) and Bullying UK.
