"Candidate" is a song written by David Bowie in 1973 and intended for his never-completed musical version of Nineteen Eighty-Four. A radically different version, with completely different lyrics and music, was released on the album Diamond Dogs in 1974 as part of a medley that split the song "Sweet Thing" in two. The only lyric shared in the two different versions are the key phrases "I'll make you a deal" and "pretend I'm walking home".

Other releases

  • The 1973 version (called "demo version") was released as a bonus track on the Rykodisc reissue of Diamond Dogs in 1990. It also appeared on the bonus disc of the album's 30th Anniversary Reissue as an "alternate version". On this same bonus disc another remix called "Intimacy remix" was released. This remix is taken from the soundtrack of the film Intimacy released in 2001.

Live versions

  • A live version of "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)" from the 1974 tour was released on David Live. Another live recording from the 1974 tour was released on the semi-legal album A Portrait in Flesh.
