From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arthur 'Candy' Evans (1901 - 1952) was a Welsh international rugby union player, who later took up professional rugby league and boxing.

Evans was born in Abersychan, Wales. He played as a lock in rugby union for Pontypool, and achieved three Welsh caps during the 1924 Five Nations. Like many other Welshmen Evans was a miner by trade; he quit mining to move to northern England as a professional rugby league player for Halifax, Leeds, and Warrington.

Evans was also a boxer, one year going straight from a Welsh rugby international against Ireland to compete in, and win, the Welsh amateur boxing championship hours later. He later became a professional boxer, though remained better known for his rugby league achievements with Leeds and Halifax. On retirement from rugby he became a professional gambler.

In 1952, facing substantial debts, Evans committed suicide.
