Capital TV is the free local broadcast tv station for Cardiff, the
capital city of Wales. The award-winning station is licensed by the
UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom. From its transmitter in Cardiff
Bay it broadcasts local news, local programming, documentaries,
features and educational programming plus international news from
Sky, teleshopping from QVC and up to four movies a day.
Capital
TV was founded in 1998 by David Morris Jones - former Head of News
and Current Affairs at BBC Wales, Controller News and Current
Affairs for ITV in the South and South East of England, and Head of
Programme Development for HTV (ITV1 Wales). Capital TV first went
live on air in December 2002.
The station broadcasts 24/7
across the city on traditional analogue tv on Channel 49 with a
horizontally polarised signal. Viewers don't need any set-stop
boxes, satellite dishes or subscriptions to receive it. Capital
TV's output can also be seen around the world as it's streamed live
continuously on its website, www.capital.tv. Capital TV has been
broadcasting since 2002 and every week is claimed to reach 37% of
the population of Cardiff (320,000) plus an estimated 156,000 every
week on its web site. Capital TV's major shareholders are
Media4Group Ltd and NewsNet UK Ltd. Capital TV is endorsed by
Cardiff County Council and the National Assembly of Wales but
receives no public funding of any kind and is the only tv
broadcaster in Wales financed entirely by advertising
revenue.
Capital TV serves the whole of the city and all the
diverse communities within it. It is the only local tv station in
Wales.
