A Capstone microturbine. This machine has a single-stage radial compressor and turbine, a recuperator, and patented foil bearings.

Capstone Turbine Corporation (NASDAQCPST), incorporated in 1988, is a California based gas turbine manufacturer that specializes in microturbine power and heat cogeneration systems. Capstone has sold and shipped more than 6,000 of these one-moving-part systems worldwide. It is the only microturbine manufacturer of oil-free gas microturbines, made possible with the use of foil bearings.

The company sells products for electrical power generation, cogeneration, biogas-fueled renewable energy, and hybrid vehicle power. It has Microturbine offerings in the following sizes: 30 kW, 60 kW, 65 kW, and 200 kW. Higher output systems are also available. But these utilize multiple 200kW turbines. Capstone is a supplier of Microturbines to UTC Power's PureComfort System product.

An example of a hybrid vehicle is the Capstone CTM-380, with a 30kW (40hp) gas turbine running on diesel, driving a generator that recharges Li-Po batteries when nescessary. The batteries can be charged from home. Electric motors means that performance is 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, 150 mph top speed. Range could be 500 miles on one tank of diesel. The chassis is the Factory Five Racing GMT
