Carboarding

Carboarding is a new branch off of the sport wakeboarding, it differs from cable or boat riding in that the rider is towed behind a vehicle. In many ways it encompasses a lot of the aspects of winching in that it has a 'go anywhere' approach. Carboarding requires no capital outlay aside from purchasing a board and tow line, this makes it a viable approach for riders who cannot afford to purchase a boat or cable time. When using a car to tow the rider difficulty can arise in finding a suitable location, the shoreline is perfect assuming the car is four wheel drive or the sand is particularly hard, but otherwise an alternate location must be found. Canal tow paths and small natural lakes make ideal carboarding spots. Due to its multi-vehicular approach carboarding can in essence occur behind any vehicle assuming that it has sufficient horse power, torque and traction however the most popular vehicles remain four wheel drives and tractors.

History

Over the years there appear to have been many different forms of carboarding including riding both a snowboard and a surfboard behind a vehicle.

The initial pioneers of the modern form of carboarding (specifically wakeboarding behind a vehicle) are believed to be William Parry-Jones, Kit Ingham and Richard Robinson, who came up with the idea in Rhosneigr in the summer of 2005. Claims regarding an earlier date for carboarding with a wakeboard could well be justified however no such source material exists to prove this either in literture or on the internet. Carboarding was featured in an Audi A6 4.2 V8 television advert however the wakeboarder was superimposed onto the image of the car and the car was shown to be driving on top of the surface of the water rather than along the shoreline.
