Carlton Public School is a
public school located in
Sydney,
New South Wales,
Australia.
It was established in
1918.
Over the past 10 years the school has grown rapidly and new facilities have been built such as the
library,
office,
hall and
canteen.
The school celebrated 75 years of teaching in 1993.
History:
Carlton Public School was first opened in 1918 as an Infants school with over 100 students enrolled.
It cost just over 3178 pounds and was completed ahead of schedule.
The progress in the region was so rapid that by the middle of 1920, over 400 students attended the school.
With so many students crammed into seriously over crowded rooms, the school inspectors at the time recommended the immediate building of an separate extension and the creation of a Primary Department.
On 9th March 1923, the school was divided into two departments, Primary and Infants.
Despite all this, there was still insufficient accommodation at the school and further additions were made in 1926.
Four more classrooms, two on each floor with a staffroom, stairway, enclosed veranda, balcony and hat room were all added to complete the original Infants building.
Even with this new extension, the numbers in the school had grown to 1040.
In 1928, an additional eight classrooms plus two weather sheds (basement) were added in a massive wing facing Percival Street and over half an acre of additional land was added to the school site by purchasing small lots from adjoining owners.
Over the years many things have changed at Carlton Public School.
With the great influx of European migrants in the 1960's and 70's, the population of the school began to gain a multicultural perspective.
In 1975, students whose parents were born overseas outnumbered those with parents born in Australia.
The trend continues today with the school having an 89% non-English Speaking Background component.
Carlton Public School was different to many other schools in the district.
Most schools enjoyed a long period with the same principal however at Carlton Public School very few head masters stayed more than a few years.
The current principal, Mr Patterson, is the longest serving principal in the history of the school.
He is the 26th principal to lead the school in a nearly 90 year history.
The large numbers that existed back in the 1920's and 30's are repeated today with 941 students currently enrolled at Carlton Public School.
