Carolyn Brereton (nee Murray) was a former Ottawa newspaper editor.
(Born
June 27,
1955) in
Hong Kong. She is a British
Citizen and later in 1990, became a Canadian citizen by living with
her husband. She has dual citizenship of British and Canadian. She
was born to John and Katrine Murray. John worked for the British
Foreign Service, and Katrine was a housewife, who was American. At
the age of seven, her father retired and the family moved to
Haslemere, Surrey,
England. She has one older brother named Ian. She went to an all
girls school during her education. She later went on to university,
and later went to
Oxford University. She also attended
Carleton University when she came to
Canada in 1987 and
Algonquin College to enhance her skills to
be a newspaper editor.
Carolyn got excepted into the British
Foreign Serivce and went on posting to
Havana, Cuba in June 1981. She worked at The British
Embassy in
Havana. During
the posting, she met a Canadian diplomat named
Stephen Brereton,
and later married him in her hometown of
Haslemere on July 31, 1982. Carolyn went on
posting to
Yokohama
and
Tokyo, Japan, and
Brussels, Belgium. She
helped out at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo on a regular basis.
During those postings, her husband worked for the Canadian
missions, and she relaxed at home. She had two sons named James and
William, who were born before the posting to
Brussels on August 31, 1991. They
are twins. The family left on September 1992 and returned in 1996.
Carolyn got involved in the kid's school and fought vigorously to
not close
Crichton Street Public School,
in
New
Edinburgh,
Ottawa,
Ontario. Carolyn had been vice chair in the parent council for
Crichton School. She had been a parent at Crichton in 1996-1999.
Crichton Street Public School
closed on June 1999. From 2000-2005, she was the editor of "New
Edinburgh News" and from 1999-2003, she was the editor of "Manor
Park Chronicle". She succeeded
Barbara Benoit, who previously been editor of
both newspapers. Both of the papers are local community newspapers
in
Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada. In 2003, Carolyn left the "Manor Park Chronicle", because
her kids were graduating the school that was local to Manor Park,
which is the school James and William attended. The school was
called
Manor Park Public School. Carolyn
regularly vonteered at Manor Park, by helping out in the classroom
to organizing pizza lunches. She also was vice chair at the
parent's council in 1999-2001. She had been a parent at the school
in 1999-2003. In 2005, she left the "New Edinburgh News" to go on
another posting to
Buffalo, New York, USA. Stephen became the
Canadian Consul General in
Buffalo, New York.
Cindy Parkanyi replaced
Carolyn for the New Edinburgh News, and
Sharleen
Tattersfield replaced Carolyn for the Manor Park Chronicle. In
2002, Carolyn got nominated for the "National Capital Region
YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award". Her category was The Ottawa
Citizen Community Volunteer Award. During her editorship, Carolyn
fought Ottawa City Hall from closing libraries in Ottawa, because
of cuts to budget. The fight was successful. In January 2005, she
made a newspaper presentation at
Summit Alternative School to tell
children about the layout of the newspaper, and how do make a
newspaper for a school project that the Grade 8 English teacher
started. That was the school that her sons attended. She was a
parent in 2003-2005 at Summit Alternative. She volunteers regularly
with
Park School of Buffalo, where her
sons attend presently. She is now living in
Buffalo, New
York, USA.
