Carsten Ramelow (German pronunciation: [ˈkaʁstn̩ ˈʁamɛloː]; born 20 March 1974 in Berlin) is a retired German international footballer who last played for Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen. He played as a Central defender and often as a defensive midfielder. He is best known for his tough tackling and defensive positioning.
After growing as a player at Hertha BSC, including a finals appearance in the 1992-93 DFB-Pokal, Ramelow signed for Leverkusen in 1995, playing a major part in the clubs domestic and continental exploits, before retiring due to persistent injuries in March 2008.
In 1998 Ramelow first appeared for the German national team, and went on to win 46 caps. He was on his country's roster at Euro 2000, and then played at the 2002 World Cup. He retired from the national team just before Euro 2004.
He was involved in a famous incident with A.S. Roma's Francesco Totti at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, while playing a UEFA Champions League game. Totti jumped on a sliding Ramelow stomping on his shoulder and back.
