Kasteel Well is a fully restored
12th century castle located in the Dutch province of
Limburg, in the small village of Well,
Netherlands, near the
German border, approximately 2 1/2 hours south of
Amsterdam.
The castle is where students on
Emerson College's Semester Abroad program are housed.
Every fall and spring semesters, about 80 students from Emerson's Boston campus and every summer about twenty, live and take classes at the Castle.
Students take classes in communications, theatre, and the arts.
As apart of their education, students are given the chance to travel throughout the European continent on free weekends and on two mandatory educational excursions, currently in
London, England and
Prauge, Czech Republic.
The program is spear-headed by the program director, Dulcia Meijers, with Rob Duckers and Chester Lee serving as Assistant Directors.
Emerson College obtained the Castle in 1986 and has been sending students there ever since.
Currently, the Castle is a national Dutch landmark.
The castle is made up of two buildings: the Main Castle and the Voorburcht.
There is an inner and outer moat, which provide a place for many birds including multiple varieties of ducks, black swans, geese, peacock, and sometimes small fish.
The Castle's gardens are available for the public to walk around and admire the grounds.
Here there are several well-maintained flower beds, shrubbery, fountains, tower ruins, and trees.
