She is a 2002 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where she was a reporter and editor of The Daily Tar Heel) and was a writing finalist in journalism awards given by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in 2002. Doty's article for the National Writing Championship was awarded first place in the on-the-spot competition; she won second place overall in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program<ref> William Randolph Hearst Foundation - 42nd Annual Journalism Awards Program 2001-2002</ref>.
