History ==
In 1845, the pastor of the little Catholic chapel in Vermilionville, Rev.
Abbe Antoine Megret, wrote the Bishop of Louisiana, most Reverend Anthony Blanc and asked for religious teachers for the parish children.
On that request, four Sisters of Mount Carmel left New Orleans to establish a mission in Vermilionville.
In 1846, the Convent All Grace was opened for the girls of the parish.
The Convent was known later as Mount Carmel Convent.
Records show eight girls were the first students of the school.
The Convent was located on what is now Lafayette Street and the Sisters struggled to maintain high academic standards.
However, the young school was burdened with severe problems.
With an enrollment of only 30 pupils in 1848, the Sisters weathered a scarlet fever epidemic and then from 1850 to 1855, a yellow fever epidemic.
In 1863, the Civil War brought additional hardship.
Finally, in 1880, Mount Carmel graduated its first class with only two students.
By the turn of the century Vermilionville had become the town of Lafayette and in 1919, Bishop Jules B.
Jeanmard asked Father William Teurlings, pastor of St. John Cathedral, to establish a school for the boys of the parish.
The bishop also asked that the school be placed under the direction of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
The Cathedral School opened Monday, September 15, 1919 with 170 boys in grades 3-8.
Four yours later, in 1923 the Cathedral School listed eleven students in its first graduating class.
Mount Carmel and Cathedral marked these early years by rapid growth, as both schools expanded to include eleven grades.
Both high schools received accreditation by the State Board of Education in 1925-Cathedral established its first football team in 1926 and the first band in the parish in 1933.
By 1948, both schools had grown from eleven to twelve grades.
High standards forced consolidation.
In 1967, Mount Carmel High School and Cathedral High School consolidated to form Cathedral-Carmel High.
The new co-educational school retained its split campus.
In 1982, St. Thomas More High School was built and the Sisters of Mount Carmel sold their property and relocated grades kindergarten through sixth to the newly remodeled Cathedral campus on St. John Street.
In 1983 grades nine through twelve moved to the newly built Catholic high school.
