Catherine (キャサリン Kyasarin?) is an upcoming action-adventure game developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game will be Atlus’ first game for seventh-generation consoles in high definition. It has been said that the game will have some “shockingly adult scenes” by Shigenori Soejima—the game’s character designer—during an interview. Shoji Meguro—the game’s sound composer—described the music as being “classic”, “adult oriented” and “erotic.”[2] The cinematic portion of the game is handled by Studio 4°C.[3]

The game will shift between action and adventure scenes depending on what point of the game the player is at. The action mechanics in the game are apparently very deep, as the player will have to make choices in order to pass “stages”. The game's producer, Katsura Hashino, explained that there are various ways to do this. He also said that “Vincent’s character can change in many ways depending on the player’s choices throughout the game,” and added “his character development can get pretty unusual.”[4]

The adventure segments in Catherine will consist of running around town and visiting various places.[4]

It is stated, from Famitsu, that Vincent will not be alone in his nightmares and that he'll be encountering a large number of lambs. In a dream sequence, the lambs, as well as Vincent, are being chased by a giant pair of hands, one of them holding a blood-covered fork.

There may be some connections between the dream world and the real world. One of the screens in Famitsu magazine shows the report of a man's death on the news; there is a rumor going around the town that when you dream that you're falling and you don't wake up before hitting the bottom, you will die.

Hashino has stated that there are multiple endings, and the first play-through of the game should last twenty hours, but in order to obtain all endings, it’ll take up to thirty hours to complete.[4]

The game follows Vincent, a salaryman who one day bumps into a mysterious 22-year-old woman called Catherine. Later that night, he begins to have nightmares which transport him into a world of unending staircases. In order to escape from his recurring nightmares, Vincent has to keep on reaching the top of the staircase.[2]

Vincent (ヴィンセント Vinsento?) is the game's main protagonist. He is a 32-year-old single salaryman at that point in life between independence from one’s parents and marriage. He has no ambitions in terms of love and romance. His life changes when he meets Catherine.

Catherine (キャサリン Kyasarin?) is a mysterious 22-year-old woman who has a charming face and a “well-proportioned” body that makes anyone turn and take notice. She happens to be Vincent’s type.[2]

Katherine (キャサリン Kyasarin?) is a 32-year-old mid-management level employee at an apparel maker. She and Vincent are from the same town and are old childhood friends. The two are close to the point that Katherine knows how many sugar cubes to put into Vincent's coffee. She's apparently pregnant with Vincent's baby.[5]

The game’s existence was first hinted at in the PSP game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable. In this game, Vincent appears in the bar Club Escapade on certain days, though in the game he never reveals his name and is simply referred to as “Man Drinking Alone” in his dialogue boxes. In conversing with the player character, he reveals hints related to his problems, though also states specifically that they are “nothing that the player character needs to worry about.” It is not yet clear if the game is considered part of AtlusMegami Tensei franchise, or if it has any specific ties to the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona universe outside of Vincent’s cameo in P3P.

The game’s producer, Katsura Hashino, stated less than two weeks after its announcement that Catherine’s actually been in development for quite a while, saying “the Persona 4 development team would switch back and forth between developing Catherine’s first stages and polishing up Persona 4”.[4]
