Cave Story (洞窟物語 Dōkutsu Monogatari?) is a freeware action-adventure video game released in 2004 for PC, designed and created over five years[2] by Daisuke Amaya, art-name Pixel. It has been translated to English by Aeon Genesis.

Nicalis, an independent video game company, is working with Daisuke Amaya to bring the game to Nintendo's WiiWare service. The updated re-release is due to be released on March 22, 2010 in North America.

Gameplay

The main character moves across the game screen, and can jump and shoot at will. Initially, the player may only run and jump, but a variety of weapons and items can be acquired throughout the game. Weapons can be obtained from treasure chests or traded at various locations in the game. A leveling system allows the player to level up their weapons to do more damage as they collect experience from fallen enemies, similarly your weapons can lose experience and even level down as you get hurt, presenting unique situations.

Plot

The main character awakens in an underground cavern with no memory of how he came to be there. He finds a village populated by rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas, who are being persecuted by the Doctor. Two of the Doctor's servants, Misery and Balrog, are looking for a Mimiga named Sue, but mistakenly abduct a Mimiga named Toroko. The player's main quest is to rescue Sue, save the Mimigas from the Doctor, and escape the floating island on which the game is set. There are three different endings: a good ending (naturally the hardest to get, involving a very difficult final stage and two extra bosses, including a multi-phase final boss), a normal ending, and a bad ending (which occurs about halfway through the game and requires little effort to get). The endings are based on the player finding various secret items.

Characters

Quote (クォート Kwōto?) is the player character of the game and a largely silent protagonist. He is a robot. Quote's name is only revealed through special actions of the player. In early versions of the game, he was named Curly Brace.[3]

Curly Brace (カーリーブレイス Kārī Burēsu?) is a "female" robot who protects a family of Mimigas. She ends up becoming Quote's friend and partner.

Sue Sakamoto (坂本 数 Sakamoto Sū?), the daughter of Momorin Sakamoto, never wanted to come to the island. She was turned into a Mimiga by Misery.

Fuyuhiko Date ("The Doctor") (伊達 冬彦(ドクター) Date Fuyuhiko (Dokutā)?) is the current master of the Demon Crown. He takes Mimigas from various places to feed them red flowers, which turn them into killer monsters, and unleashes them on the Surface.

Balrog (バルログ Barurogu?) is Misery's "punching bag" and a minion of The Doctor. Because of the Demon Crown's curse, he is forced to fight for the Doctor, but helps the player on an occasion, after asking Quote and Curly "not to tell a soul" about it. He uses the interjection Huzzah at each appearance. In early versions of the game, he was a basic common enemy.[3]

Misery (ミザリー Mizarī?) is a witch, minion of the Doctor and the daughter of Jenka. Because of her role in creating the Demon Crown, she has been forever cursed to follow the orders of whomever bears it.

Jenka (ジェンカ?) is an old witch who has lived on the island for a long time. She resides in the Sand Zone and raises puppies. She is Ballos's sister and Misery's mother.

Ballos (ボロス Borosu?) is Jenka's brother, Misery's uncle, an extremely powerful sorcerer, and serves as the final boss of the game. He was tortured into insanity and corruption and abused his magical powers, and thus was sealed inside the island by Jenka.

The Core is a living entity who holds the island aloft. If the core is destroyed, it is said that the floating island will fall to the ground.

Kazuma Sakamoto (坂本 数馬 Sakamoto Kazuma?) is Sue's brother and a specialist in Sky Dragons.

King (キング Kingu?) is the leader of the Mimiga Village since the death of Arthur. He feels he is responsible for anything that happens to Toroko. King dislikes Sue because she is an outsider and her appearance coincides with the Doctor's attacks on the village. He dies trying to save Toroko, but gives his sword to Quote, requesting that the robot avenge him.

Jack (ジャック Jakku?) is the village's second-in-command. He wears goggles and an ushanka hat with a wing emblem on it.

Toroko (トロ子?) is a Mimiga who accepted Sue and made friends with her. She is mistaken by Misery and Balrog for Sue and abducted. Balrog forces her to eat red flowers, transforming her into a frenzied version to fight Quote, but she loses and dies. She was the sister of Arthur.

Momorin Sakamoto (坂本 百鈴 Sakamoto Momorin?) is a rocket scientist and the mother of Kazuma and Sue. She did not want to bring them to the island, but could not leave them on their own.

Professor Booster (ブースター博士 Būsutā-hakase?) is the head of the research team and a specialist in jetpacks.

Itoh (伊藤?) is an engineer who specializes in control systems. He was turned into a Mimiga by Misery. He eventually helps Momorin Sakamoto to finish a rocket for Quote to fly up to face the final enemies.

Arthur (アーサー Āsā?), the legendary hero of the Mimigas, fought against the evils of the island, driving them back, but was eventually killed by the Doctor and his servants prior to the beginning of the game. He was Toroko's brother.

Reception

Cave Story has been very well-received by critics. 1UP.com described it as "so massive that it rivals modern GBA Castlevania and Metroid games in terms of scope and play time."[4] Inside Mac Games ascribed the game's popularity to its "polished feel, engaging storyline, and compelling artwork".[5] In the July 2006 issue of Swedish game magazine Super PLAY, Cave Story was given 1st place on their list of the 50 best freeware games of all time.[6] EGM stated that "The burgeoning Western indie game scene owes a tremendous debt to Japanese pioneers like Studio Pixel, whose freeware hit Cave Story proved that with sufficient vision, skill, and passion, a single developer can still craft a deep, compelling action game."[7] Gamesmaster magazine gave Cave Story second place in their Free Flash Games Tournament.

Versions and ports

Cave Story has been ported to the AmigaOS 4,[8] Linux,[9] and Mac OS X[10] operating systems, the PlayStation Portable,[11] Xbox, and GP2X. A Nintendo DS demo has been released. On August 5, 2009, Xfire added support for the game by its Japanese name.

WiiWare

A version for Nintendo's Wii will be released via WiiWare.[12][13] Developed by Nicalis, the WiiWare version will have "new, exclusive content and features" including widescreen and 480p display options, new character designs by Amaya,[13] a completely redone English localization,[14] and enhanced graphics and music (arranged by Yann van der Cruyssen and others), though players will be able to switch them for the original music and visuals.[15]

Cave Story (洞窟 物語 Doukutsu Monogatari ?) is a freeware action-adventure game released in 2004 for PC, designed and created over five years by Daisuke Amaya (a.k.a. Pixel). It has been translated to English by Aeon Genesis of Rom-hack.net.

Nicalis, an independent video game company, is working with Daisuke Amaya to bring the game to Nintendo's WiiWare service. The updated re-release is due to be released in 2009 in North America, and October 2009 in the PAL territories. On August 5, 2009 Xfire now supports Cave Story by its Japanese name.

The main hero of Cave Story

Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari) is a freeware PC game made by the Japanese author Pixel. Full of high-detail pixel art reminiscent of a SNES game, you follow the adventures of an amnesia-riddled robot as he wanders through cave after cave, finding new weapons to upgrade, and finding new friends as well. Because of how story driven the game becomes, there's three possible endings; you'll just have to find them all.

Story

There are two sections: Basic, and Spoiler. The plot-heavy section has been marked off by the two spoiler tags below. If you don't want the plot ruined, don't read between them.

Basic

In the beginning, you start out in a cave. You don't know who you are, or how you got there. However, you decide to venture out of the room. After getting your first weapon, the Polar Star, you manage to escape the first cave you were located in, and land in a village called Mimiga Village. It consists of rabbit-like creatures called the Mimiga, who are under the rule of a man who calls himself "The Doctor". Apparently, a new Mimiga named Sue has surfaced in the village that the denizens had never met before, and fear that they may be punished for her presence. After having locked herself up in the house of a now-deceased Mimiga called Arthur, you venture in to find her.

Spoiler-Heavy

Please be warned right now that this section contains plot details from the super-secret ending. This final warning is being issued in case you do not want any of the extended plot told to you.

A few thousand years ago, there was a witch named Jenka who had a brother named Ballos. Ballos was a powerful wizard, and was loved by all the villagers. However, the king of the land was jealous of the villagers loving Ballos more than himself, and had Ballos locked up. Ballos was tortured on-end by the castle guards, until one day, he snapped. In a blaze of magic, the king was enveloped in Ballos' energy and was destroyed. However, Ballos could not control his powers and his fury went on to destroy the kingdom that had loved him so much, and his wife and children.

Jenka saw the rage that Ballos couldn't control, and, not having the heart to kill her own brother, instead imprisoned him in a floating island so that he would never harm others. Misery, Jenka's daughter, had other plans for Ballos. She managed to convince the imprisoned wizard to create the Demon Crown, a crown that would grant its wearer the same powers Ballos had. However, Misery was subsequently cursed by the crown, and was forced to do the bidding of whomever wore it unless it were to be destroyed. Over the years, many had gone to the island, and every single time, the wearer loses control of the power and proceeds to destroy themselves in the process.

Fast forward a few thousand years. The world's governments had just received information of a crown that would grant its wearer whatever they desired. All they had to do was retrieve it from the floating isle it resided on. Each government sent robot armies to the island to retrieve the crown for their own personal gain, whereas two more robots, made by an unknown source, were sent to do the opposite of the armies; to destroy the crown. These two robots were named Curly Brace and Quote. The robot armies were, however, met with resistance. Mimigas, small, cute rabbit-like creatures that live on the island had ingested a flower known as the demon flower. Red in color, it caused the Mimigas to turn into feral beasts that quickly wiped out the vast legions of robots. After Quote and Curly's confrontation with the current crown holder, they were knocked unconscious.

A while later, Quote wakes, with no recollection of who he is, or where he is. All he knows is that he has to get out.

Trivia

  • Cave Story took five years to make, including programming, art, and music. It was finally completed in December, 2004.
  • One month after it was completed, Aeon Genesis, a group of translators, rewrote the game's script into English, making the game appeal to a much, much wider audience.
  • The game has three endings.
  • Pixel made his own music format for the game, called Organya. A program comes with Cave Story, called OrgView, which plays all of the BGMs in the game. However, if you hunt down Organya Maker (which can be found on the unofficial file board, and was also created by Pixel), you may find six extra sounds included.
