Once the province of gossip columnists, celebrity journalism in the United States and many other nations now is the sole subject of magazines (People, Us Weekly), weekly newspapers (National Enquirer, Star), television news shows (ExtraTV, Entertainment Tonight), and websites. However, thousands of other mass media outlets include some celebrity reporting in their products.

Celebrity journalism has garnered an unsavory reputation in part because of its subject matter and in part due to the actions of journalists covering celebrities, including paparazzi. Celebrities tend to frequently sue some media outlets claiming libel, even though the burden of proof to prove libel is higher than for those who are not celebrities.
