Although the entertainment field is frequently characterized and caricatured as being "liberal" and therefore supportive of the Democratic Party, the truth is that the Republicans have long been able to count many notable actors, musicians, athletes and other celebrities among their supporters.
Indeed, a number of celebrities have run for political office as Republicans, including the presidency.

  • Shirley Temple Black- Actress. Ran unsuccessfully for Congress in the 1960s. Was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 1968 by Richard Nixon, and served as Ambassador to Ghana, also under Nixon, and Ambassador to Czechoslovakia under George H.W. Bush. She was also the White House Chief of Protocol for Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.
  • Sonny Bono-Singer/Actor who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for California (1995-1998). He had also been the mayor of Palm Springs, California, and unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1992. His widow, Mary Bono, assumed his seat in Congress, and has won reelection ever since.
  • Jim Bunning-MLB Hall of Fame baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Kentucky (1987-1999) and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998.
