Challenge is a United Kingdom digital TV channel owned by Virgin Media Television.
It was originally called The Family Channel from 1 September 1993 to 31 January 1997, which aired a mixture of genre shows mainly including sitcoms, game shows, dramas and entertainment.
It was later re-branded as Challenge TV from 1 February 1997 and it mainly focuses on gameshows taken from a variety of terrestrial and digital channel archives (among the few non-gameshows it has aired the shortlived U.S. drama Dr. Vegas and the 1995 crime drama film Casino).
It was originally a primetime block between 19:00 to 00:00 after The Children's Channel block has ended but since The Children's Channel closed on 3 April 1998, Challenge TV is now a 24 hours, 7 days a week channel.
On 20 May 2002, the channel was re-named again but this time it was just Challenge? and on 30 June 2003, the question mark was removed to leave the Challenge name in its place.
Most are repeats of programmes acquired from terrestrial channel archives, but a few are original productions commissioned by Challenge itself.
The channel also aired some poker game shows including World Poker Tour, Celebrity Blackjack and Casino Casino.
The channel used to have interactive features for digital cable and satellite viewers watching certain shows, enabling them to play along at home and it used to offer a large selection of games and competitions before the start of each programme, during commercial breaks and after the end of each programme since it started in 1997 but in 2009, Challenge dropped all of the games, interactive features and competitions for budgetary reasons.
The channel only aired programmes in the letterbox format (4:3) but on the 3 June 2008 it switched to the widescreen format (16:9) along with all other Virgin Media Television channels. This was coupled with a revamped logo.

I have a vague remembrance
Of a story, that is told
In some ancient Spanish legend
Or chronicle of old.
It was when brave King Sanchez
Was before Zamora slain,
And his great besieging army
Lay encamped upon the plain.
Don Diego de Ordonez
Sallied forth in front of all,
And shouted loud his challenge
To the warders on the wall.
All the people of Zamora,
Both the born and the unborn,
As traitors did he challenge
With taunting words of scorn.
The living, in their houses,
And in their graves, the dead!
And the waters of their rivers,
And their wine, and oil, and bread!
There is a greater army,
That besets us round with strife,
A starving, numberless army,
At all the gates of life.
The poverty-stricken millions
Who challenge our wine and bread,
And impeach us all as traitors,
Both the living and the dead.
And whenever I sit at the banquet,
Where the feast and song are high,
Amid the mirth and the music
I can hear that fearful cry.
And hollow and haggard faces
Look into the lighted hall,
And wasted hands are extended
To catch the crumbs that fall.
For within there is light and plenty,
And odors fill the air;
But without there is cold and darkness,
And hunger and despair.
And there in the camp of famine,
In wind and cold and rain,
Christ, the great Lord of the army,
Lies dead upon the plain!
